HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
After looking back last year with our Best In NZ Music 2020, we are taking a look forward to the year ahead. We have handpicked eight artists/groups that we are expecting big things from in 2021 and you need to know about.
So whack on some tunes and get your reading galsses out. Here's to Radio BurgerFuel's Ones To Watch 2021.
Whack on these tracks from Who Shot Scott, Swerve City, BLKCITY and more. Open your ears and your mind and prepare to be rewarded
Bringing together what are becoming some of the most respected names in NZ hip-hop has been a recipe for success for BLKCITY. With JessB, Raiza Biza, Mo Muse, Abdul Kay & Blaze The Emperor on board, it is no wonder that they have been creating some fire. Their latest release 'Salsa' dropped in late December, and member Mo Muse told us that we could expect an album as 2021 progresses. With gigs all summer including Splore in late February, there's every chance you can see BLKCITY in your city.
It's been a long road for ex-Wellingtonians Bakers Eddy. We fell in love with them way back in 2015 when they released their first single, so were happy to forgive them when they decided to call Melbourne home and further their careers there. They've grown up, definitely haven't mellowed and have just played a massive gig with Aussie legends The Living End. We are SO HAPPY to hear that their debut album is due very shortly, and we're looking forward to when things allow them to be back in Aotearoa to play us some tunes again. Here's one of our faves - 2018's 'Can't Afford It'.
We love nothing more than hearing tunes that involve the some amazing BurgerFuel crew. Auckland three-piece spaces. are Harry, Holly (from BurgerFuel Silverdale) and Spencer. They've just dropped their debut single Feel Good which is perfect for the sun-filled summer we're having.
This dreamy project is the brainchild of Dunedin's Mackenzie Hollebon. She moved from behind the drums of Lacuna and other bands to take full control of this solo project. After releasing her debut EP 'Creature Of Habit' last year, she has just dropped a new single 'Floating' to kick of her 2021.
After electirfying crowds at a huge live Bay Dreams set in Tauranga, Auckland based experimental hip-hop artist Who Shot Scott has returned with a new track called 'Wish Bad Things'. Peep the video (sorry) shot through a hotel door peep-hole below.
Cheap Sleeper are Benjamin, Johnathon, Jacob, Tyler and Josh from the North Shore. After completing some massive sold out shows including the Mangawhai Tavern over summer, they have dropped their debut single 'Messy Minds' which is available on Spotify right now. When this landed in our inbox it made it straight to the playlist and when you hear the easy summer vibes you will understand why.
These two tell a great tale, and their own story is busy being told. We first caught up with them in 2019, and since then they have continued releasing music and getting ready for what we are sure will be a massive year for this hip-hop duo. Their latest track came out pre-Xmas and has set heads nodding across Aotearoa with the raw, but smooth flow we have become accustomed to.
The legend tells of a band drawn together by fate when drummer Adam jumped into an Uber driven by guitarist Kevin. The rest as they say is history. Made up of members from Fire at Will, Armed in Advance, Impostor Syndrome & Saints of Taboo, we cant wait to see what this year has in store for these lads and their ferocious live shows.
Listen to our Ones To Watch 2021 playlist on Spotify below (or find it HERE) and jam it on repeat. Here's to 2021 and all the good things it will bring!
