STREETS APART - THE AUCKLAND CBD CREW

Posted by BurgerFuel

With two inner city Auckland stores in close proximity, we have the hustlers and bustlers covered with a wholesome gourmet burger experience that is just streets apart. So, whether you're uptown or downtown, we’ve got you.

Two warm and friendly couples run each respective store and are still relatively fresh in their franchisee shoes, providing an energy and enthusiasm that is unique to new owner/operators. Meet Ash and Roshnee who have been running BurgerFuel Queen Street for the last 3 years, and Chris and Rachel, who took over the helm of BurgerFuel Customs Street in October 2019.

Ash and Roshnee’s interest in the brand all started in Tauranga where BurgerFuel became a part of their social ritual and go-to place to catch up with mates. They loved the vibe, street art in store and Ash was particularly drawn to the brands alignment with muscle cars. The product brought them back time and time again and it was this, combined with the experience and memories they shared in the store that had them exploring options to own their own. Their journey then took them to Auckland, where they fell in love with the City of Sales and achieved their dream of running their own BurgerFuel store.

Ash comes from a business background and his experience in the grocery sector was easily transferable to operating the store. Roshnee has a degree in marketing and her extensive knowledge in retail marketing has meant that local store marketing has been a natural fit and something she is now super passionate about.

Ash, born in England, met Rosh in NZ and today, both are now strong advocates for Auckland, “we get to meet all walks of life”, Roshnee says, “there’s never a dull day in the city. With so many tourists, we sometimes even feel like we are on holiday ourselves!”. They love to catch a show at the Civic and regularly take their young family for a stroll down at the Viaduct.

Chris has had a long history with BurgerFuel, with his career in burgers starting a decade ago, grilling and serving burgers as a store staff member. Gaining his experience at different stores in the Auckland CBD and Parnell, the opportunity arose and he and his wife, Rachel, decided it was time to try their hands at running the beast of a ship that is BurgerFuel Customs Street.

Rachel is a User Experience designer by day, currently working in cinema software. She is passionate about bringing people the best possible experience both through digital channels at her job, and via the customer experience in her store.

On choosing to take on this challenging new path, Chris says “I’ve always loved the people in BurgerFuel, the customers in the dining room and the people running around behind the scenes, all making it work seamlessly. I’ve been lucky to work with amazing people over the years”.

Rachel was a fan of the brand, specifically the Customs Street store, since it opened in 2013 and became her local. “Technically I’ve known BurgerFuel Customs Street for longer than I’ve known Chris!”. Both love the unique aspects of BurgerFuel that make it more than just burgers, “Currently, I’m particularly loving how BurgerFuel are moving into the artistic space with their Creative, Sweet initiatives. It really resonates with the designer in me”, says Rachel.

Their favourite things to do in the city is check out the local eats – Chris recommends their neighbour, “Shout out to Le Petit Café next door to us! Great coffee and chat”. They dig Culprit on Wyndham Street as their go-to restaurant in the CBD and Rachel is a big fan of Dice and Fork at Vic Park – “a great place to catch up with people over drinks and a huge selection of board games!”.

Try their BurgerFuel hack next time you’re in town. Chris suggests grilled pineapple on…everything (but the trick is, grilled one side only!), or Rach is all about loaded Chicken Fenders – “a slice of cheddar and a scoop of avo on top makes them next level”.
